What is Pilates?

Pilates is a form of exercise that is predominantly focused around using & integrating the core muscles and breath into whole body movement.

There are many focus points within Pilates including good posture, spine stability, core strength, flexibility, balance and coordination to name a few.

Pilates is incredibly versatile, with it being widely used in the rehabilitation setting by many rehab qualified health practitioners, by professional sporting clubs getting the most out of their athletes, by private studios all over the world and even facilities for senior citizens to keep them mobile.

There is a reason why many GP’s from across Australia refer their clients to Clinical Pilates - it works!

Who can benefit from Pilates?

People of all ages and fitness levels can participate in Clinical Pilates. Have a read of some examples below that can be treated using Clinical Pilates.

Arthritis & Joint Stiffness

Unlike running and walking, Pilates is very low impact allowing arthritis patients and those suffering from general stiffness to move their body without the risk of injury or aggravation. This can help patients maintain cardiovascular fitness and restore joint flexibility and strength.

Rehabilitation

Pilates enhances the recovery process for common injuries and conditions, such as disc bulges, scoliosis and low back pain. It can also be beneficial for rehab post surgery eg. knee or hip replacement, ACL knee repair, shoulder surgery. Pilates is performed in a safe, non weight-bearing environment which can help reduce pain and improve functionality.

Balance & Co-ordination Issues

Pilates incorporates a wide range of props to challenge our muscles and nervous system, which in term improves balance, stability, co-ordination and helps reduce the risk of falls.

Back Pain

Believe it or not roughly 80% of Australians will suffer from it at some point in their lifetime! Apart from being painful, for some people back pain can be debilitating and effect activities of everyday living. One of the challenges that comes with back pain (and any other painful condition) is understanding how to manage it. One recommended form of management for back pain is - you guessed it - Pilates!! Pilates is great for helping retrain and strengthen the deep muscles of the abdomen and spine that are effected by back pain. It's also a great way to get the body moving in the early stages of rehab which can help in the recovery process.

Fibromyalgia

Fibromyalgia syndrome is a condition characterised by widespread muscle/joint pain & stiffness. Patients with Fibromyalgia will often fatigue much quicker and experience some form of muscle soreness, therefore it is important to be in a controlled environment such as Pilates where reps, spring tension and technique can be easily modified.

General Health & Wellbeing

You don’t need to be rehabbing an injury or condition to do Pilates. It’s great for those wanting to stay mobile, fit, strong and healthy. Pilates is fantastic for people of any age or fitness level, and with the combination of apparatus and instructor knowledge - there’s a class suited for almost everyone who wants to maintain and/or improve their general health and wellbeing.

And remember - it’s not all about Physical wellbeing either. Doing Pilates can also benefit mental health (just ask our clients!) and provide a social setting with like-minded people.

Pre & Post Natal

A woman's body undergoes many changes during pregnancy. Some of these pregnancy related changes can lead to low back pain, sciatic pain, hip pain and pelvic / SIJ pain. Strengthening of the abdomen, pelvic floor, spinal muscles and hips can help provide internal support that can ease pain and discomfort during and after pregnancy.

Anyone that has Private Health Insurance in Australia would have received an email prior to 1st April, 2019 regarding widespread changes to health rebates to many services. Unfortunately, Pilates was on the list of services that will no longer be able to provide health rebates. This applies to any services that contains the word ‘Pilates’. This won’t affect the ability to claim for Clinical & Rehab services provided by Allied Health professionals such as Physiotherapists, Osteopaths and Exercise Physiologists.
